Mazdaspeed 3 / 6 Throttle Body Spacer
When we began early development work on the MS3 it became quickly apparent that BATs (Boost Air Temps) and heat soak were a major issue with the platform. To resolve this we began monitoring ambient temps, intake air temps, I/C outlet temps and I/C core temps in relation to BATs. After reviewing the data we noted the temperatures would fluctuate very quickly (as expected) but when comparing this data to the information reported from the BAT sensor we realized things were a bit skewed.
The Problem:
The factory BAT sensor is located at the end of the intake manifold in a recessed pocket where it is exposed to a very low volume of intake air under most driving conditions. This lack of flow creates a heat soaked area around the sensor in the intake manifold which the ECU interprets as the actual air temp entering the engine. The problem here is once this area becomes heat soaked it sends an exaggerated temperature reading to the ECU which not only effects power output but drivability and fuel economy as well. When your vehicle feels like it’s lacking power, throttle response is not as crisp or it just feels “flat” after low speed or stopped operation, this is a good indication you are experiencing this issue. This product will greatly improve this situation by sending accurate air temp information to the ECU!
The Solution:
To eliminate this issue, we elected to move the sensor to a position directly behind the throttle body. The air actually enters the engine here and this relocation allows airflow directly across the sensor. This provides a more accurate method of monitoring the rapidly changing temps under WOT, at cruise and in stop and go traffic.
By providing the ECU with more accurate air temp information we have reduced the amount of time or distance the ECU keeps the car from running at less than optimal performance.
Throttle Body Spacer/BAT Sensor Relocation kit includes:
• 1" aluminum spacer
• pre-drilled and tapped holes for sensor relocation
• required gasket
• (4x) throttle body mounting bolts
